Surat is a city in the state of Gujarat, western India. The word Surat literally means face in Gujarati and Hindi. Located on the banks of the Tapti River near its confluence with the Arabian Sea, it was once a major seaport. It is currently the commercial and economic center of southern Gujarat and one of the largest urban areas in western India. It has a well-established diamond and textile industry and is a major sourcing hub for clothing and accessories. About 90% of the world's diamond supply is cut and polished in the city.
