South Australia (often abbreviated as SA) is a state in south-central Australia. It covers some of the most arid areas of the country. With a total land area of ??984,321 square kilometers (380,048 sq mi), it is Australia's fourth largest state and territory by land area and second smallest by population. It has a total population of 1.8 million people. Its population is the second most concentrated in Australia, after Western Australia, with more than 77% of South Australians living in or around the capital, Adelaide. Other population centers in the state are relatively small; Mount Gambier, the second largest centre, has a population of 33,233. South Australia shares a border with all other inland states, as well as the Northern Territory; It is bordered to the west by Western Australia, to the north by the Northern Territory, to the northeast by Queensland, to the east by New South Wales, to the southeast by Victoria and to the south by the Gulf of Great Australia. The state comprises less than 8% of Australia's population and ranks fifth out of six states and two territories. The majority of its inhabitants live in the larger municipality of Adelaide. Most of the others settled in the fertile areas along the southeast coast and the Murray River. The state's colonial origins are unique to Australia as a planned and free British settlement province, rather than as a prisoner settlement. Colonial administration began on December 28, 1836, when council members were sworn in near an old eucalyptus tree. Like the rest of the continent, the region has a long history of human occupation by many tribes and languages. The South Australian Company established a temporary settlement at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island on 26 July 1836, five months before the founding of Adelaide. The guiding principle of colonization was systematic colonization, a theory adopted by Edward Gibbon Wakefield, later used by the New Zealand Company. The goal was to turn the province into a civilized center for free immigrants, promising civil liberties and religious tolerance. Although its history is marked by periods of economic hardship, South Australia remains politically innovative and culturally vibrant. Today it is known for its fine wine and many cultural festivals. The state's economy is dominated by the agricultural, manufacturing and mining industries .
