Shillong is a hill station and the capital of Meghalaya, a northeastern Indian state, meaning "Abode of the Clouds". It is the capital of the East Khasi Hills district. Shillong is the 330th most populous city in India, with a population of 143,229, according to the 2011 census. The hills surrounding the city are said to remind Britons of Scotland. Therefore, they also call it the "Scotland of the East". Shillong has grown steadily in size since it was placed by the British as the civilian hill station of Khasi and Jaintia in 1864. In 1874, when Assam was established as the Province of the Chief Commissioner, it was chosen as the new government seat because of its ideal location between the Brahmaputra and Surma valleys, and the climate of Shillong is much more relaxed than that of the tropics of India. Shillong remained the capital of undivided Assam until the creation of the new state of Meghalaya on 21 January 1972, when Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya, and Assam moved the capital to Dispur in Guwahati. Shillong was the capital of Composite Assam during British rule and later until the establishment of a separate state from Meghalaya. David Scott, an official with the British East India Company, was the Governor-General's Agent for the Northeastern Border. During the First Anglo-Burmese War, the British government needed a road connecting Sylhet and Assam. The route crosses Khasi and Jaintia hills. David Scott overcame the difficulties his administration faced in the face of opposition from the Khasi Syiems - their leaders and their people. Impressed by the favourable cool climate of the Khasi Hills, they negotiated with the Syiem of Sohra in 1829 for a sanatorium for the British. Thus began to consolidate British interests in the hills of Khasi-Jaintia. A serious revolt of the Khasis against foreign occupation of their lands followed. It started in early 1829 and continued until January 1833. In the end, the leaders of the Confederacy of the Southern Khasi could not match the military might of the British. David Scott brokered the surrender of resistance leader Khasi Tirot Sing, who was then taken to Dhaka (now Dhaka) for detention. After the Khasis resistance, a political agent was stationed in the hills, with his headquarters at Sohra, also known as Cherrapunjee. But Sohra's climatic conditions and facilities did not please the British. They then moved to Shillong. "Ïewduh" is the largest market in Shillong. The name "Shillong" was later used because of the location of the new town below Shillong Peak. Shillong is named after the Khasis god, "U Blei Shyllong". In 1874, a separate Chief Commissioner was established with Shillong as the administrative body. The new administration includes Sylhet, now part of Bangladesh. The chief also included Naga Hills (now Nagaland), Lushai Hills (now Mizoram) as well as Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills. Shillong was the capital of mixed Assam until 1969 when the Autonomous State of Meghalaya was established. In January 1972, Meghalaya became a full canton. The Shillong Town Council has a long history dating back to 1878 when a proclamation was issued stipulating Shillong and its suburbs including the villages of Mawkhar and Laban as a railway station under the City of Bengal Act 1876. Consists of the villages of Mawkhar (S.E. Mawkhar, Jaiaw and parts of Jhalupara and Mawprem) and Laban (Lumparing, Madan laban, Kench's Trace and Rilbong) in Shillong municipality which have been accepted by Haiñ Manik Syiem Find and hire a top agency or company for your next big project related to Digital Marketing, Advertising, Social Media Marketing, Content Writing, Market Research, PR, Email Marketing, Mobile App Development, Web Design, Web application development, Media Planning and many more in India and other countries on AgencyNetwork.
