Ranchi is the capital of the state of Jharkhand, India. Ranchi was the centre of the Jharkhand movement, calling for a separate state for the tribal regions south of Bihar, north of Odisha, west of West Bengal and the eastern region of present-day Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand was established on 15 November 2000 by splitting Bihar Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas. Ranchi has been selected as one of the 100 Indian cities to be developed as smart cities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities mission. During the era of the British Raj, the city was the summer capital of Bihar due to its cold climate during winter. Ranchi is also one of the oldest towns in Jharkhand. Jagannath Temple and Ratu Palace are some sites that have witnessed the history of Ranchi. Ranchi is experiencing rapid economic growth, and several parks, special economic zones and industrial zones are being developed. New industries and modern areas have recently been built to develop the city. Ranchi is also nicknamed "the city of waterfalls". According to a folk tale, the captain chose "Archi", a tribal village in Oraon, as his headquarters. Archi means bamboo forest in the Nagpuri dialect. The British accidentally changed the name "Archi" to "Ranchi". Captain Thomas Wilkinson renamed the village of Kishunpur Rashi. Until 1927, this place was called Rashi. In his book The Mundas and their Country, anthropologist Sarat Chandra Roy writes that the town's name comes from the Mundari word aranchi or "short stick" used to drive livestock. According to another local story, the name Ranchi derives from a local bird named "Rici", mainly found on the grounds of the Pahari Mandir. Rici is the name of the Black Kite (Milvus migrans) in the Mundari language, the modern landmark of Ranchi city, Pahari Mandir, also known as Rici Buru - kite hill, and the city originates from the foothills of Rici Buru with the Bada Talab was built by Commissioner Thomas Wilkinson on the same site.
