Punjab is a state in northern India. Part of the greater Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, the state is bordered by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the north and northeast, Haryana to the south and southeast, and Rajasthan to the southwest. by the Indian union territories of Chandigarh to the east and Jammu and Kashmir to the north. Sikhism was founded between the 15th and 17th centuries by the Sikh Gurus of Punjab and led to the formation of the Sikh League following the fall of the Mughal Empire and the ensuing conflict with the Durrani Empire. This union was incorporated into the Sikh Empire in 1801 by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The greater Punjab region was annexed by the British East India Company from the Sikh Empire in 1849. Following widespread religious violence in 1947, the British Indian province of Punjab was divided along religious boundaries into West Punjab and East Punjab. West Punjab became part of Muslim-majority Pakistan, while East Punjab became part of Hindu-majority India. Following the Punjabi Suba movement, Indian Punjabi was reorganized on a linguistic basis on 1 November 1966. The southern and eastern regions that spoke Haryanvi and Hindi were split off as Haryana, while The northern Pahari-speaking hills are attached to the Himachal state. The remaining, predominantly Punjabi-speaking areas became the present state of Punjab. A separatist insurgency occurred in Punjab in the 1980s. Currently, Punjab's economy is the 15th largest state economy in India with a gross domestic product of 5.29 trillion yen ( $66 billion) and GDP per capita of 151,367 yen (US$1,900), ranking 17th among Indian economies.
