Perth is the capital and largest city of the state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state's population) living in Greater Perth as of 2020. Perth is part of Western Australia's South West Land Division, with most of the urban area located on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. The city has grown outward from the original English settlements on the Swan River, where the city's central business district and the port of Fremantle are located. Perth is located on the traditional land of the Whadjuk Noongar people, where Aboriginal Australians have lived for at least 45,000 years. Captain James Stirling founded Perth in 1829 as the administrative center of the Swan River Colony. It is named for the city of Perth in Scotland, due to the influence of Sir George Murray, Patron of Stirling, who had connections to the area. It was granted city status in 1856, although Perth City Council currently administers only a small area around the central business district. The town's population increased significantly after the Western Australian Gold Rush in the late 19th century. It has grown steadily since World War II due to a high rate of net migration. Post-war immigrants were mainly from the British Isles and Southern Europe, while recent arrivals saw a growing Asian population. Several mining booms in other parts of Western Australia in the late 20th and early 21st centuries made Perth the regional headquarters for major mining operations. Perth has a number of important public buildings as well as cultural and heritage sites. Notable government buildings include Parliament, Government House, High Court Building and the Perth Mint. The city is served by Fremantle Harbor and Perth Airport. It served as an Allied naval base during World War II and today the Royal Australian Navy's Western Fleet Base is on Garden Island. All five universities in Western Australia are based in Perth. The city has been ranked as one of the most livable in the world and is ranked in 2020 by the Global Cities Research Network and Globalization as a Beta Global City. As of 2021, Perth has been divided into 30 local government areas and includes more than 350 suburbs. The urban boundary extends 123 kilometers (76 mi) from Two Rocks in the north to Singleton in the south, and 62 kilometers (39 mi) inland to the east. Outside the central business district, important urban centers within the metropolitan area include Armadale, Fremantle, Joondalup, Midland and Rockingham. Most of them were originally established as separate settlements and retained a distinct identity after being merged into the larger metropolitan area. Mandurah, Western Australia's second largest city, forms a conurbation with Perth along the coast, although in most cases it is still considered a separate city.
