Bhopal is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the administrative seat of Bhopal District and Bhopal Division. It is called the city of lakes due to its many natural and man-made lakes. It is also one of the greenest cities in India. It is the 16th largest city in India and the 131st in the world. After the establishment of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal was part of the Sehore district. The district was split in two in 1972, and a new district, Bhopal, was created. Blooming into prominence around 1707, the city was the capital of the former state of Bhopal, a private British state ruled by the Nawabs of Bhopal. Many heritage structures from this period include the Taj-ul-Masajid Palace and the Taj Mahal. In 1984, the city suffered the Bhopal disaster, one of the worst industrial disasters in history. Bhopal has a solid economic background, with many large and medium industries operating in and around the city. Bhopal is considered one of the critical financial and economic destinations of the two wealth pillars of Madhya Pradesh, the other being Indore. Bhopal's GDP (nominal) has been estimated by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics of Madhya Pradesh at INR 44,175 crore (2020-2021). A Grade Y city, Bhopal is home to many important educational and research institutions and institutions across the country, including ISRO, BHEL, and AMPRI's Total Control Facility. Bhopal is home to many research institutes of national importance in India, namely IISER, MANIT, SPA, AIIMS, NLIU, IIFM, NIDMP and IIIT (currently operating from a temporary campus inside MANIT). Bhopal is also the headquarters of the Bhopal Division of the Western Central Railway (WCR), whose office is located in Habibganj. Bhopal also has a regional science centre, Bhopal, one of the constituent units of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). The city gained international attention in December 1984 after the Bhopal disaster, when a Union Carbide pesticide factory (now owned by Dow Chemical Company) released a mixture of deadly gases composed mainly of methyl isocyanate, leading to one of the worst industrial disasters in the world. The Bhopal disaster continues to be part of the sociopolitical debate and logistical challenge facing the people of Bhopal. Bhopal has been selected as one of the first 20 Indian cities (first phase) to be developed as smart cities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities mission. Bhopal has also been ranked as the cleanest state capital of India for three consecutive years, in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
