Agra is a city located on the banks of the Yamuna River in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, approximately 230 kilometers (140 mi) southeast of the capital New Delhi and 330 kilometers west of the state capital Lucknow. With a population of about 1.6 million, Agra is the fourth most populous city in Uttar Pradesh and the twenty-third most populous city in India. Agra's notable period of history begins during the reign of Sikandar Lodi, but the city's heyday dates back to the Mughals. Agra was the first city in the Indian subcontinent and was the capital of the Mughal Empire under the Mughal emperors Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Under Mughal rule, Agra became a center of learning, art, commerce and religion, and saw the construction of Fort Agra, Sikandra and Agra's most prized monument, The Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favorite queen. With the decline of the Mughal Empire in the late 18th century, the city fell to the Marathas and then to the East India Company, respectively. After independence, Agra became an industrial city, with a booming tourism industry, as well as the manufacture of footwear, leather and other products. The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city has mild winters, hot dry summers and monsoons, and is famous for its Mughlai cuisine. Agra is part of the Golden Triangle tourist circuit, along with Delhi and Jaipur; and Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc, a tour of Uttar Pradesh, featuring Lucknow and Varanasi.
