Nandan Nilekani is all set to redefine the triumph of UPI. Moving in the same direction he founded Beckn in 2019, an open specification for mobility and commerce remotely similar to UPI, that works as an integrated marketplace providing a strong ground to new players and occupants who can utilize Beckn to explore more customers.

Beckn is formulated as a non-profit system that will supplement open protocol stipulations and enable their development while working with an ecosystem of members from Government, businesses, and civil society according to its website. Its current partners are logistics startup, Dunzo, and B2B eCommerce firm, ShopX. Beckn was primarily circumscribed to mobility but earlier this year it supplemented location-based commerce.

Beckn is originally owned by Open Shared Mobility Foundation. According to the revelations of its regulatory filings, Nilekani is the only reported investor in the organization. To this date, he raked 8,40,000 shares in two proportions.

Beckn operates to reduce the barriers of entry for mobility solutions by fabricating more jaunts on its platform at affordable rates. It eliminates the hassles of discoverability and reduces the acquisition cost of customers for the latest and existing corporations operating across miles of connectivity.

The ecosystem of Beckn incorporates location-based commerce across sectors such as restaurants, hotels, healthcare, and final mile delivery. It also launched a notion draft on eKirana. This agenda of eKirana aims to allow participants such as local kirana, grocery SaaS platforms, logistics, final mile delivery, and trade bodies to organize and unravel the encounters of operationality and outreach, together.

The eKirana network will be open and can integrate the technical industry and resolutions of partaking members impeccably on the basis of an open and practical Beckn protocol. Apart from reaching to the service merchants, developers, and providers, Beckn has also enabled the government to encourage a practical and open ecosystem of requisitions to link customers to service providers avoiding the problem of monopoly.

Cities can also utilize Beckn to ensure the development of an integrated agility network. Governments can integrate with service providers promptly by consenting its services on Beckn, thus eliminating the transit operators. Governments can also benefit through Beckn by implementing evidence-based planning around substructures like parking spaces, bus stops, peak and off-peak timings, and new metro lines.

While Beckn seems to be a revolutionary discovery for digital commerce from the Aadhaar’s propagandists, it gets more interesting with WhatsApp. According to the references stated above, WhatsApp is slowly approaching towards determining a super app through Beckn’s open protocol specification.
