Amazon Food, the online food delivery service of Amazon has been launched in select pin codes of Bengaluru. This move by Amazon comes amidst Swiggy and Zomato, the two largest players in the segment facing an all time low in order volumes due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon conveyed to its consumers through its app that it is offering free and contactless delivery by hygiene certified restaurants.

It has been doing rounds that Amazon has been luring eateries with competitive commissions under its larger plan to build a comprehensive product portfolio that ranges from grocery and food to electronics and home products.

The e-commerce giant has invested more than $6.5 billion in India and had plans to initially launch the service in India last year, which it postponed to March and pushed it further owing to the stay at home orders issued by the Indian government in March end.

The services are now active in parts of Haralur, Marathalli, Whitefield and Bellandur according to the app.  Also there are talks that the network will expand to cities with higher density in a few weeks.

An Amazon spokesperson also said that they are launching Amazon Food in select Bengaluru pin codes that allow customers to select and order from handpicked cloud kitchens and local restaurants that have passed the company’s high hygiene certification bar.  The spokesperson further confirmed that they are adhering to the highest standards of safety to ensure customers are safe and enjoy a delightful experience at the same time.

This move by Amazon came as a shock to many as the restaurant industry has been severely affected by the nationwide lockdown due to the Corona crisis.
